Objectives

Students will: calculate amount of water wasted by a dripping faucet; analyze the financial benefits of fixing leaking faucets.

Standards Addressed

Science: 2.4.1 Math: 3.4.2, 3.4.3

Materials Needed

A dripping faucet, 3 gallon-sized milk jugs filled with 3 different colors of water, copie sof Money Down the Drain worksheet (p.332) and Answer sheet (p.331), 6 stopwatches, containers to collect dripping water, a graduated cylinder, calculators.

Time Requirement

50-60 minutes

Procedure/outline

Allow faucet to leak during class discussion. At end of discussion show the collected water. Discuss leaking faucets. Divide class into 6 groups-assign 2 groups to each jug. Complete Money Down the Drain worksheet and answer sheet for their jug. Arrange the 3 milk jugs on table with collection buckets. (Jug 1 -small pin prick on bottom, Jug 2- slightly larger hole, Jug 3-small nail hole. Have groups with same jug compare findings. have all groups compare & discuss findings. Discuss if any money is lost by these leaks. Should they be fixed?

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Students in grades 4-6 may need help in calculations.

Assessment

Calculate how much water is lost from dripping faucets. Identify financial reasons leaking faucets should be fixed.
