Objectives

Give students the opportunity to collect their own "bugs". Sort and key organisms found.

Standards Addressed

Systems, Orders and organization, Environmental Quality, Inquiry

Materials Needed

Dip and kick nets, waders, plastic buckets, sorting trays, keys

Time Requirement

2 x 50 min (depending on depth of keying)

Procedure/outline

1. Teach basics of keying organisms-show Valley City State website. 2. Demonstrate technique for collecting macroinvertebrates. 3. Collect bugs and key out.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Use computer/cameras to create albums of organisms found for future collections.

Assessment

Participation in collection. Quiz on keying out unknown organisms (use pictures)
