Objectives

Students will be able to measure elk antlers and relate size to an individual elk's genetics, age, nutrition, and health.

Standards Addressed

Inference, measurement, comparing and contrasting

Materials Needed

Student sheet-p.50-53 (Project Wild Educator's Guide Wild about Elk), antlers (various sizes-deer), tape measure, calculators.

Time Requirement

2 55 min class periods

Procedure/outline

1. Hold a discussion about antlers. Ask-what are antlers? How are they differnt than horns? Do antlers have a function? 2. Distribute antlers for examination. 3. Distribute copies of student data and record sheets. Allow time to complete calculations. Facilitate when necessary. 4. Final discussion.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

1. Weigh antlers to compare mass. 2. Look at official scoring system for measuring deer antlers (Boone & Crocket System)

Assessment

Spot check worksheets. Have students write a final summary of their findings.
