Objectives

The student will sort insects by like characteristics and display information on a bar graph.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

Insects, butcher paper to put insects on to sort, crayons/c. pencils, graph wkst.

Time Requirement

1 hour

Procedure/outline

1. Collect insects at the prairie, freeze overnight. 2. In student groups sort insects by like characteristics, examples: beetles, spiders, wings, etc) 3. Using the graph sheet color in boxes for each number of insects found for that group. 4. Use information from entire class to show the diversity of insects on a prairie.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Have students write questions about the graph for their parents to answer. Make a pictograph or pie graph to show information.

Assessment

Look at graphs to make sure information is displayed correctly.
