Ice in Motion
4
Objectives
To be able to describe how glaciers have made depressions where wetlands are formed.
Standards Addressed
Materials Needed
5"x4" container, sand, ice cubes or chunk of ice, hair dryer, paper towels
Time Requirement
25-35 minutes
Procedure/outline
Students will predict and learn how wetland depressions are formed. They will discuss glacial process and the geology of ND. 1. Discuss wetlands. 2. Ask questions of how they are formed. 3. Take container, place 2 in. of sand on bottom. Now take ice chunks and bury them into the surface. 4. Melting can be done w/hairdryer. 5. A depression will form and this is where most wetlands are formed.
Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions
Have students weigh and measure each chunk of ice. Have them predict what will happen. Measure depression when ice is melted.
Assessment
Have students draw and briefly describe the glacial process. Discuss the areas where they live that are wetlands.
