To introduce the identification key students. To identify plants, rocks, minerals, using a dichotomus key.

Procedure/outline
|
1. Introduce idea and tell students the purpose of using a key. 2. All students take their shoes off and put into pile. 3. Start having the students figure out a way to divide the pile into two groups (one student should record what charactaristic is used. 4. Continue until all pairs of shoes are in their own category. 5. Show the actual key to be used (plants, minerals). 6. Tell the students vocabulary that will be used in the key. 7. Walk through several examples of classifying actual plants or minerals. 8. If students are capable, split them into groups to use the keys on their own.
