Objectives

Students will: determine how water conservation practices save wtaer, identify water conservation habits they can change or adopt, recognize that water conservation is important.

Standards Addressed

Science: 2.4.2, 2.4.3, 2.4.5 Math: 5.4.1 Social Studies: 5.4.2 Cultural/Visual Arts: 2.4.3 Technology: 3.4.2 Language Arts: 4.4.2

Materials Needed

Paper & penciles (journals), graphing paper, research materials (computer, library)

Time Requirement

1 week

Procedure/outline

Have students brainstorm ways they use water. Discuss ways or situations where water is being wasted. List ways water can be conserved. Have students keep track of their water usage for one week in their journals. Have students make a graph to show their water usage. Have students research water conservation strategies & develop ways they can conserve water. Have students identify 3-5 water conservation habits they can adopt. Do these changes for 1 week. Record water usage. Have students make a graph of water usage using conservation habits.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Compare the two graphs - discuss the differences. Write an editiorial or develop a TV spot that reflects the students views on the importance of water conservation.

Assessment

List & illustrate ways water can be conserved. Graphs of water usage before & after conservation.
