Objectives

Students will synthesize prairie information by relating everyday objects to it.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

strands of thread, shovel, empty waterbottle, baggie of different color paper, matches, doughnut hole, 3 layer cake picture, stickers for each group

Time Requirement

20 minues-after wrap-up of landforms (rivers-mountains-prairie-ocean)

Procedure/outline

1. After prairie unit put students in groups with objects from material list. 2. Each group will work together to connect objects to prairie & write it on a sticker to share. 3. After working time each group will share with the class.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

A special needs child maybe used as a facilitator with a key and "visit" groups. Also, ESL children may rehearse this activity before the whole class participates.

Assessment

Teacher will assess group behaviors & presentations and also content information about the prairie.

Other Comments

Objects-metaphoric function: bunch of leftover thread-root mass of prairie plants; small shovel or hoe-bison hooves to break up ground; empty or almost empty waterbottle-prairie doesn't have a lot of water; baggie of different colored papers-plant diversity; matches-fire which causes some seeds to sprout; doughnut hole-burrowing animals home; 3 layer cake-animal life-3 layers-in air, on ground, below ground.
