Caterpillar Camouflage

Students will understand the importance of camouflage.
Standards Addressed
Materials Needed
A green lawn, brown lunch sack, several pieces of 2" yearn (green, brown, & pink), storybook about caterpillars.
Time Requirement
20 minutes
Procedure/outline
1. The teacher reads a book about caterpillars. 2. Walk out to the lawn. 3. Each student grabs a few pieces of yarn from the sack. 4. On "Go!" students toss the yarn into the air and let them fall to the grass. 5. Students look to see which color of yarn (caterpillar) is easiest to spot.
Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions
Give the students 1 minute to pick up as many caterpillars as they can find. Graph the results.
Assessment
Students will be able to explain why it is important to have camouflage.
