Objectives

Discuss role of water in disease transmission. Review signs, symptoms and history of disease. Recognize importance of clean water for future generations. Problems are closer to home than many believe

Standards Addressed

Grade 8 curriculum "Water Systems"

Materials Needed

"Super Sleuth" Activity Sheets (p 107) Project WET, signs/symptoms & history (cut into strips, place in numbered envelope), disease summary sheet, answer key (create using number given to envelope)

Time Requirement

One half to one hour (activity/game) and follow up/extensions

Procedure/ Outline

1. Introduce the biggest killer of children in the world (waterborne diseases).
2. Discuss the concept of clear vs. clean water.
3. Tell the students you will be giving them a disease.
4. Hand out envelopes containing symptoms and history of disease.
4. Ask each student to remove one slip of paper (symptom) at a time and act out the symptoms. Look for students with what they believe to be the same disease.
5. Continue removal of paper slips and using the answer key, have them determine their disease.

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Have students research their disease following the game. Review newspaper clippings on water disease concerns across the country

Assessment

Describe symptoms, discuss spread of these diseases, research location of disease in the world

Other Comments

The answer key/list is a helpful addition to activity in project WET guide. Permitting the students to describe how they feel (dramatic component) is a good warm up and helps them remember the symptoms
