Objectives

Recognize the roles of condensation and evaporation in the water cycle. Relate water cycle to different ecosystems

Standards Addressed

Learning about the water cycle, evaporation and condensation

Materials Needed

Hot plate, frying pans, ice and gloves for protection

Time Requirement

50 minutes

Procedure/ Outline

Discuss the properties of the 3 major climates: Polar, Temperate and Tropical. Discuss the water cycle. Heat one pan of water on the hot plate. When water vapor is rising from the boiling water hold the other pan of ice cubes above the hot pan using gloves to observe the condensation and precipitation

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Record the mass of ice cubes (any quantity) and store them for two weeks in a freezer, check the mass for evidence of sublimation

Assessment

Students will draw a model of the water cycle of describe the water cycle based upon this demonstration
