Objectives

To have students develop a sense of awe and respect of Aboriginal history

Standards Addressed

Viewing & representing, oral history, celebration of community, legends

Materials Needed

Map, tape/CD, copies of robin story, how to read a pictograph, overhead Spirit Canoe, pretend campfire, colored lights, blank paper, photocopy of birch bark, teepee tracers, brown paper, felts

Time Requirement

6 lessons

Procedure/ Outline

Lesson 1 - Discuss the routes Aboriginals took over Land Bridge. Discuss nomadic vs. Nootka way
Lesson 2 - Discuss how important events are recorded now and then (oral tradition, model legends). Show symbols sheet, overhead Spirit Canoe. Children listen to story of robin once
Lesson 3 - Children hear story of robin a second time and doodle draw it thru mind mapping. Children share doodles
Lesson 4 - Children are given pictorial representation of the story of the robin and follow along as I read. Children do their own
Lesson 5 - Children tell a partner the story from their pictogram
Lesson 6 - Transfer to birch bark. Photocopy the birch bark
