Objectives

Calculate amount of wasted water caused by a dripping faucet. Calculate the cost of leaky faucets

Standards Addressed

Use of metrics and conversion. Conservation of natural resources

Materials Needed

Stopwatches, liter jugs (plastic), graduated cylinders, containers to catch water, information on local water costs

Time Requirement

About 2 class periods

Procedure/ Outline

Use a dripping faucet in your classroom to begin to fill a container. Show how much is in the container after a discussion. Using three plastic jugs with collecting buckets beneath, assign groups of students to each jug. Jugs are filled ahead of time with a hole of varying size punched into each. Duct tape covers the holes. Students have "Down the Drain" worksheet to record volume lost in one minute. Calculate amounts lost and the cost for a day, month and year

Assessment

Calculate cost and discuss how to correct this problem. Have students check faucets at home
