Detemining the Stream Velocity
11th, 12th

Objectives

To determine how fast water is moving and what implications this may have during the year

Standards Addressed

Standard 2 - Science

Materials Needed

Stop watch, local stream, grapefruit/orange, measuring tape, stream flow meter (optional)

Time Requirement

100 minutes/2 class periods

Procedure/ Outline

Have students measure out any length of a stream. Using a stopwatch and a grapefruit/orange, throw the object behind the first marker, don't start timing until it "touches" the starting line. Stop timing at finish line. Make sure to do this in the middle of the stream. Repeat steps 4 more times and find the average. Have students determine why the stream's velocity is the way it is, factor in season, recent precipitation

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Could use a stream flow meter if possible, but they are costly

Assessment

Example problems/worksheets/quiz/test
