Objectives

Students will appreciate that literature reflects people's feelings about water-related events. Illustrate the effects of drought, flood and other water-related disasters on human lives and through creative writing

Materials Needed

Copy of Grapes of Wrath, copy of Steinbeck entry in Contemporary Authors: New Revision Series Volume 35, writing materials

Procedure/ Outline


1. Students think of a climatic event that has affected populations. Question how people's lives have been changed by these weather patterns.
2. Discuss the role of literature in documenting cycles of flood, drought, and other water-related events, using The Grapes of Wrath as an example. 
3. Have students pick a climatic event to research and write a fictional story relating to the human impact of cycles of drought, flood, etc


Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Have a speaker from the national weather service come in and talk with the class

Assessment

Appraise the students work using accuracy, attention to detail and consistent theme
