Objectives

To determine the water quality due to the aquatic critters located on-site

Standards Addressed

Standard 4 - Science

Materials Needed

Waders, fine mesh net, Tupperware, data table, identification key of Macro-Invertebrates

Time Requirement

100 minutes/2 class periods

Procedure/ Outline

Discuss importance of indicator species (macro-invertebrates) and water quality. Briefly go over collection procedures. Collect critters, hopefully from the same body of water, but different sites. Place collected critters in Tupperware and identify. Fill in data sheets. Determine water quality of the different sampling sites

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Person may have to bring in samples due to transportation possibilities. Could possible need some spillover time for a third class period

Assessment

Collect data tables of accuracy/neatness and watch fro work ethic in the "field".
