Objectives

To exploesre the biodiversity of aquatic macro-invertebrat

Standards Addressed

Linnean system, Classification systems, classifying an unknown living thing

Materials Needed

Pond water, animal samples, alcohol, magnifiers, posters, bins, dichotomous keys, things to classify, pictures to classify

Time Requirement

5 lessons

Procedure/ Outline

Lesson 1 - Do various classifying activities as per curriculum.Map out Animal Classifications Systems as per Linneus.
Lesson 2 - Feature Vertebrates/Invertebrates.
Lesson 3 - Brainstorm what is in a pond. Classify.
Lesson 4 - Reading and using a Dichotomous Key - show how to use keys.
Lesson 5 - Discuss how the sample is valid now but could be different on a different date, different weather, different temperature, wind, cloud cover, wind direction, season, barometer. Discuss pollution quotient

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Classify/identify 3 invertebrates. Draw. Assess their pollution quotient. Make conclusions on what they learned

Assess physical invertebrate display
