Objectives
Demonstrate how heat and salinity affect density. Relate the compactness of
water molecules to the density of water in different states

Materials Needed
Two pop bottles, density diagram overhead, student activity sheets. Hot plates
and water, beaker tongs, ice water, medicine droppers, food coloring (2), ice
cubes with food dye, hard boiler egg, beakers, salt
Time Requirement
50 minutes
Procedure/ Outline
Introduce the discussion of feather-lead riddle. Divide into groups of two.
Distribute handouts. State cautions. Have students complete activities

Part II - do as group activity the next day
